Round-Up: Go-Ahead AFL 1 & AFL 2- April 23rd/ 24th

Thu, 25th April 2024

The midweek action in Division 1 of the Go-Ahead Dublin Adult Football League started on Tuesday evening with St Sylvester’s edging joint leaders Ballinteer St John’s by 1-13 to 1-9 in Broomfield.

There was very little to separate the teams throughout as the sides entered the break on level terms but the hosts pushed on upon the restart with Alex Wright scoring their all-important goal.

Sean Guiden added three points to the Syls tally and with Pierce Donohoe and Dylan Connolly landing two scores apiece, the Malahide side claim victory through further points from Páidí White, Karl Archbald, Wright, Dan O’Leary, Ben Gaynor and Cian Donnolly.

There was another home win at Páirc Uí Mhurchú as Ballyboden St Enda’s got the better of St Mary’s Saggart by 0-15 to 0-8.

Daire Sweeney top scored for the hosts with seven points, five of which came from placed balls, while Ciaran O’Reilly and Mark Walsh chipped in with a brace apiece.

Cathal Flaherty was a key performer at the back for Boden, who built up a winning total thanks to further scores by Mark McGlynn, Darren O’Reilly, Michael McDonald and Davy Keogh.

Clontarf completed a trio of home wins on Tuesday evening as they defeated Skerries Harps by 2-13 to 0-11 in St Anne’s Park.

The hosts controlled matters for the large part thanks to influential displays by the likes of Leo Cunningham, Matthew McMahon, Fionn Delaney and Calum Aherne.

Their goals arrived through Charlie Meehan and Daragh Fagan while Kieran McKeon kept the Clontarf scoreboard ticking over as they eased home by eight points.

Wednesday night saw league leaders Na Fianna maintain their perfect start as they narrowly got the better of St Jude’s by 0-13 to 1-7 at Tymon Park.

Ballymun Kickhams were another team that enjoyed their travels when coming away from the 12th Lock with a 2-13 to 1-12 win against Lucan Sarsfields.

The bulk of the damage was done in the first-half as Kickhams enjoyed a 1-9 to 0-4 interval lead with Daragh Conlon, Leon Young and Dara Kane to the fore.

A Harry Ladd penalty brought Lucan back into the contest but a goal by Kane and two excellent placed balls from Evan Comerford handed Ballymun sufficient breathing room by the final whistle.

In the Go-Ahead AFL2, St Brigid’s continue to set the pace with goals at crucial times central to their narrow 3-5 to 0-13 away win at Ballyboughal.

Gavin Sheridan impressed between the sticks for the visitors with Darren McLoughlin and Ronan McLoughlin also resolute at the back with Conor Watt, Scott Daly and Fiachra O’Mara plundering goals at the opposite end.

That victory leaves St Brigid’s three points clear at the summit of the table, ahead of a St Patrick’s Donabate team that drew 2-7 apiece with Parnell’s.

Naomh Barróg also lie in joint second spot following their 2-11 to 0-10 success against Fingallians in Lawless Park.

The away goals were both scored in the first-half, through brothers Finn Alexander and Ryan Alexander with points by Paul Tolan, Harry Nolan and Sean Doyle helping build a healthy 2-4 to 0-4 interval lead.

Killian Wallace ensured Barróg stayed on top after the break with two excellent saves and with Mick Tolan and Conor Gibson impressing defensively, the visitors maintained control through second-half points from Paul Tolan, Mick Tolan, Ciaran Gallagher and Ryan Alexander.

Naomh Mearnóg enhanced their promotion credentials as they defeated Raheny by 4-9 to 1-10 in Páirc Mearnóg.
